Career Day at NYU

March 13, 2013 in Events, Personal

Last week a friend asked me if I would like to participate in a career panel for high school students and I said “sure why not?!

When I was in high school I attended art classes after school, on Saturdays and during the Summer at Jamaica Art Center, Cooper Union and MoMA. I will forever be grateful for the encouragement and support I received from my teachers at the programs. If it wasn’t for their assistance I would not have gotten into SVA and be where I am today.

This past Saturday I was on a panel with TV producers, directors, actors, writers, traditional artists and Broadway performers. I had to remind myself that although all of these individuals can offer great advice to these students my voice was just as important.

Being able to share my experiences and opinions ended up being therapeutic but I really connected with the testimonies each of my fellow panelists. It was reassuring to hear other people share their obstacles that in one way or another mirrored my own.

Overall I feel it was a great experience for all that were involved and I’d like to thank Patricia Ryan-Canedo, NYU Metro Center, 119 Work Force Program, my fellow panelists and each student that attended for allowing me to share myself and give back as well as making the day a great success

Here is an excerpt of my interview as featured on Innovate To Fly’s blog.

… Lots of people are shaking the world in some of the smallest of ways, and I can assure you, without even making mention of her craft, this young lady is one of them. She is beyond the shadow of a doubt, one of most kind and nice persons I know, and because I got to meet her mother as well, I know exactly where she got those qualities. She’s always giving back, volunteering here, lending a hand there, the epitome of a true servant leader. Her positivity is infectious, even in the light of situations that occurred in her past, and I’m incredibly inspired by her creation story.

I know lots of great things are on their way to her, and that’s why I want to present to you Monique Henry-Hudson! read more…

Day 74 / 291

My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me. – Jim Valvano

My father passed away at the beginning of my sophomore year of college.

I once read  ”death ends a life not a relationship” and although he was not there on graduation day in the physical sense I know he was there spiritually.

So I decided this year to create an illustration of us on my graduation day.

I have learned that  the  difficult part about dealing with death is that life goes on. My college graduation was only the beginning of many significant life moments and experiences that he will not be able to share with my family and I.

This illustration is a small reminder that he has never left my side.

I am not gone
I remain here beside you
Just in a different form
Look for me in your heart
And there you will find me
in our love which forever lives on

In those moments when you feel alone
Look for me in your thoughts
And there you will find me
in sweet memories that burn strong

Every time a tear
Forms in your beautiful eyes
Look up to the heavens
And there you will see me
Smiling down from God’s glorious skies
